I want to restore my 1957 Johnson 18 HP mechanically and cosmetically. I am considering using the services of old-outboard.com. I would like to know if any members are familiar with this person.
Additionally, I would appreciate information on any other alternate companies who perform full restorations.

I’m not looking for self-help info…..I’m not a motor rebuilder nor do I play one on TV…….

      🙂

      Name of facility is SilverMarine…..

Northern Wisconsin. Motor has been in family for 50 years. Very, very low hours. My Dad only took it out 4 to 5 times a year. Fawned over it more than Mom! 🙂 He passed it on to me 10 years ago when he couldn’t put out alone anymore. Unfortunately, with 3 kids and my dad I didn’t get out much more. It runs perfectly. Never has needed anything more than new plugs and a tune-up. Its turns heads wherever I launch and the paint is so faded! I want to see it as when it was new.

Excellent motors and in the top 3 OMC motors, in my opinion. How does the lower unit oil look like? If there is no water intrusion, consider yourself lucky. However, it wouldn’t hurt to replace the shift rod O-ring. That is usually the leaker. The CRS seals are pretty tough and hold up for years. Chicago Raw hide Seals, I believe.
How do the coils look? If they’re cracked, then they’re in need of replacement.
Impellers should be replaced, for piece of mind.
Along with what you have already done, that’s really about all you need, to make it reliable. Most would recommend a carb rebuild, but shouldn’t need it, if it’s been properly stored. Those carbs are pretty reliable if they have been treated right and I’ve had really good luck with them. I’ve had to rebuild very few of them, considering how many motors I have had pass my hands. Oddly enough, most issues with running correctly, are because of faulty or aged ignition.
