Aftmost rewind internal thread is stripped on my 54 Etude 25 HP. First thought is to install a helicoil type thread insert but the casting is thin and part of the block. Others must have had this problem and I would appreciate any advice (epoxy?). Thank you.

Are you sure it is too thin? I would think there would be enough meat there for a Heli-Coil. That certainly would be the way to go, if possible.

If there’s enough thread left to even partially hold the bolt, consider epoxying a stud in there instead and using a nut to hold the starter on. Studs make a strong repair for stripped threads.

If it’s a 1/4-20 presently, consider tapping it out to 5/16-18 thread and opening the hole in the recoil housing a bit with a round file. The larger bolt may help, too, as the rear bolt is the one that takes the heaviest beating…

Thank you everyone. Much appreciate the info. I think I will try the stud first then the other ideas. Mumbles, Do you have a favorite epoxy?

I like Marine Tex but it takes overnight to set up right. JB Quick Weld would probably work here and sets much quicker but is a bit weaker than the Marine Tex.
