I detoured around some equipment being unloaded in the road, taking a different route home, and passed by a nice place with lots of Oliver signs. I made a loop and stopped to talk with the guy. I asked him if he had any Oliver outboards, he didn’t have any Olivers but he did have this one.
What did I buy?
September 5, 2017 at 11:12 pm #64369September 5, 2017 at 11:31 pm #64371there will be a model and serial number on that motor, find it. Then, check the model year guides and you will find out what it is.
If I just tell you what it is, then you won’t learn to find the answer on your own
Best,

September 5, 2017 at 11:46 pm #643751939 9.8 HP. Groovy. It looks pretty good except for the broken handle. Hopefully I got a deal on it and maybe I can get it running. I don’t see much about these. Pretty good motor?

September 6, 2017 at 6:22 pm #64410I have to admit, they were pretty good motors. The racing model was equipped with antifriction bearings and dominated class "A" racing. The racing model was adapted into a portable water pump and many went to the Forestry Service. The Military found them handy during WW2 and many Army/Navy Surplus "Pumpers" found there way into Class "A" racing after the War. (Johnson also made a 60 cubic inch pump [the P 500] which was adapted from Evinrude’s "Storm Boat Motor".) Of course, when they had improved the model KA to be almost perfect, it was replaced by the gearshift equipped QD model in 1949 – starting a revolution . . . 😆
