The first pic is of a 12 hp Elgin/West Bend.

Many people will have a need to start these with a rope as the 11 tooth starter pinion is fragile and unavailable. But the emergency starting "collar" is only 3.5 in in diameter and does not provide enough leverage for a person of normal strength to easily start the motor.

Note the second pic, of a 7.5 hp Elgin/West Bend. The "collar" is 6.5 inches in diameter and the engine can readily be pulled through. (Partly, of course, because the engine is smaller, but the main difference is the larger "collar.") The flywheels are the same size.

Does anybody know which motors used the larger "collars," and where to get more of them, or something comparable?

I think this is the pinion you need. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-MERCURY-FOR … y0&vxp=mtr

Its a bit expensive but beats wrapping a rope.

Thanks. I bought that. New 11 tooth pinions are scarce. I still want info on the rope start sheaves.

Yes, that’s it. The second piece on the right in the one pic is just a piece of gasket material about 1/8" thick. Not sure what it’s for–maybe to dampen vibrations? any idea of a part number?

Worth noting also: The 7.5 hp flywheels are the same size externally as the 12 hp ones, but have a smaller taper and retaining nut. So if the larger starting "collar" is used on a 12 hp–as I intend to–the center hole will have to be reamed.

                  Alan,
I have a 12hp parts manual but not the 7.5hp. Most the parts I have pulled off the 12hps I am re-doing have the parts number stamped in them. If you contact the person on ebay they might be able to give you the parts number by looking for it on the actual part. Some one here most likely also has a parts manual for the 7.5s If you need any part numbers for your 12hp I can look them up.

No number on the one I pulled off–I looked.

Hopefully someone reading this has a parts manual for a 7.5hp West Bend and will post the pull rope pulley part number for the part your looking for. All I have is the 12hp parts manual and its not in there. Someone must have purchased the one I posted that was on ebay hopefully that was you.

I was working on a 16hp Bailamatic Scott Atwater and took off the rope plate and it fits onto the 12hp West Bend Flywheel using the 3 beleveled screws. The part number for a 10hp Scott Atwater rope plate is 3335-4110 I think its what a Scott 16hp uses but not sure someone reading this may know if their the same.

I found this one on ebay for a 7.5 hp scott but it kinda shows what it looks like looks like it would work well for a rope back up starter on a west bend. Gives an idea of what it looks like. I may put one on mine as a back-up.

                        Hope that helps,
                        Joe
