The Rowboat Motor Chapter Dossin Museum event is coming up soon. Saturday July 30 at the museum grounds on Belle Isle in Detroit MI.

This is a "Rowboat Motor Only" event, as we endeavor to devote an entire meet to the oldest motors in the world, which happen to be the very motors upon which the foundation of the Antique Outboard Motor Club was built. In order to be allowed to be displayed or put in the swap and sell area, it must be rowboat motor related.

Things should be in place by 9 AM, so hopefully a bunch of folks can make it out and participate in a gathering that emphasizes our favourite old marine propulsion devices.

We will be giving out awards for the best original condition motor and best CORRECTLY restored motor. The award winners for these two categories will be decided by a panel of volunteer judges who will review and score the motors using a proven scoring system.

We will have an award for the oldest running motor. A test tank will be available the day of the show. To qualify for the running motor award, your motor must run in the tank for at least one full minute…. unless you bring an Aerothrust…. then you are exempt from using the tank, unless you don’t have a suitable stand to use…..

We will not have an award for the "Concours D’elegance" category. The idea is to promote correct cosmetic restorations that do not receive over-polishing or excessive plating or clear-coat treatments.

We will give the meet attendees a chance to pick their favourite, so there will be "People’s Choice" ballots given out. If the voters choose a highly overpolished or plated motor as the winner, that is just fine, that’s why they call it "The People’s Choice Award"

This is a "winner take all" event, as the Finance Minister reports that the chapter bank account is a bit lean these days, so we’re only giving awards to the first place finishers.

Around lunch time, we will hold an auction of donated stuff that will be used to make a donation to the Dossin Museum. We will also run a 50-50 draw, again with proceeds being donated to the Dossin folks.

We are trying to make arrangements for the folks with the hot dog cart to be on site again this year, so there should be something in place if folks want to get a bite to eat near the museum.

Hopefully at least some of you can make it over to Belle Isle on July 30. If so, I will have my big fat book of 1915 Motor Boat magazines available if anyone wants to take pictures of some of the ads that are in it.

If there are any other questions, please feel free to contact me, either by email or by telephone.

      Best,
      Chris S

Reminder notice – since it was buried under about 4 pages of classic motor posts…..

If you happen to be in the Detroit area on July 30th – this years show is all Rowboat Motors, and nothing else….. well, maybe some lake freighters…. oh yeah, the Antique & Classic Boat Society people will be out as well. We’ll have rowboa t motors running in the tank, and there may be a demonstration of how to put a rowboat motor together with nothing more than a screwdriver, Crescent wrench, and some other un-special non-Mercury tools.

We will have a food vendor on site to help keep y’all from starving to death. Allow me to introduce Chef Q

We’ll have an auction of donated items, and a 50-50 draw as well. ALL Proceeds of the fundraisers will be handed over to the Dossin Museum folks as a thank-you for them hosting an AOMCI event for a second consecutive year.

Hope to see some of you there.

Last call reminder for this show tomorrow.

By the responses generated, I’m expecting attendance to be in the half-dozen range. Might be more motors there than people, lol. I guess we’ll see.

All loaded up and ready to roll. I scoured the shop and have a bunch of goodies to put out under the "ole Oak tree" for the Dossin auction.

                    Tomorrows activities;

Running various rowboat motors in a test tank provided by Charlie Schmidt
Running a very early Evinrude #1496 (probably circa 1911) for the first time in public after its overhaul
Dissecting an Aerothrust power head to get a peek inside
Special guest appearance by Dirty Gertie, an Aerothrust Pormo motor known for soiling any article of clothing silly enough to get within 5 feet of her after she fires up
Judged events for Original Condition and Restored Rowboat Motor(s)
Voting by meet attendees for the "People’s Choice" motor
Award for "Oldest Running Motor Of Show". Winner to be determined either by lowest serial number, or by rock-paper-scissors play-off, which ever makes more sense.

Hope the Weather Gods cooperate eh
