I’m back…. My neighbor and I are learning a lot about this Elto Ruddertwin Model J, thanks in no small part to the help from you all. Here are a couple of more questions. On the leading end of the gear case there is a hole that apparently takes some kind of plug, no threads in there that I can see, so I guess not a bearing adjustment screw? maybe just a “dummy” plug?
Next mystery, A couple of unknown holes. One hole at the top edge of each transom clamp bracket. Hole is about 3/8 , not threaded. What is the purpose? My only guess is that they guide the tiller ropes?
Thanks … again!

May 12, 2022 at 5:41 pm #259742No info from you guys on this,,, But I was thinking about the mystery holes at the top of the transom clamp brackets. My “uneducated” guess is the holes are to anchor end of the tiller rope that then threads around the small sheeve at each end of the tiller arm. The tiller ropes now have a 2X advantage to more steady the rudder and minimize flutter.
Any experience with this ?
For those not familiar with the ELTO ruddertwin, the motor does not swivel, there is no conventional tiller handle. Boat control is via the rudder, controlled by ropes to the forward part of the boat.
Now anybody have info on the apparently missing plug at the nose of the gear case.

May 12, 2022 at 6:10 pm #259743Regarding the hole in your gear case nose. I assume your Model J
is different than my Elto Model C ruddertwin.
I don’t believe mine has a pointed nose cone that goes in the gearcase,
but rather a threaded plug for the prop shaft end-play adjustment,
held in place by a cotter key.Prepare to be boarded!
May 12, 2022 at 7:19 pm #259749Thanks Bucc, what you show is what I would expect. So there is no separate plug/ cap, the cotter engages the slot in the bronze thrust bearing. I’ll have to look closer at my friends gear case.

May 12, 2022 at 9:07 pm #259753Joe, the original cotter pin hole is drilled at an angle from inside
the threaded bore, and comes out in the hole about an inch up
the leg. Someone decided to drill a cross hole through the gearcase,
for the cotter key, perhaps to make it easier to install?Prepare to be boarded!

Found a link to a model J and it does look to
have a button in front.
You might check with Art to see if he makes a
replacement.

Buck, I suspect someone lost the pin
your motor had a pin originally. You could
probably make one and braze up the holes.
You are getting pretty good with that stuff.

May 13, 2022 at 9:25 am #259771Tubs, my other Model C has the correct pin. Maybe after the motors
are “lake tested” I’ll sell one of the motors. Not enough room for
duplicates on the rack!Prepare to be boarded!

In my scrap box I have a muffler to fit your J.
The indicated holes have been over sized but
you have the ability to plug and re-tap them.
Its fine other than that. It’s junk to me. Its
yours if you want it. I can’t help with the
turn out that goes on the end.

May 13, 2022 at 10:18 am #259778Thanks again guys, now I understand. The motor is at the friend’s house so I can’t just run down and check it , but now I know what to look for.
