Anybody ever remove a flywheel knob? What’s the secret?

I want to take the knob off my parts motor and use it to replace the starter pulley on my current project. The slotted screw under the flywheel looks like you should be able to just turn it while holding the knob and everything comes off but when you do there seems to be an insert in the knob itself that just turns. Is this an insert or the end of the screw? Am I missing something?

A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

The knob is flared on the underside of the flywheel, notice the chamfer???? I have just used a hunk o steel and driven the complete knob assembly out of the flywheel, NOTICE, hunk o metal must be smaller than the hole… To install, push it back in the hole and use the ball end of a ball peen hammer to re-open the flare….You won’t have to use a 10 pound sledge either…it will move somewhat easy.. Good luck

Tubs, Yes it does…. I ruined one trying to "unscrew it… Then I think Chris Scratch told me about pushing it out from the bottom….I can do a short video if you would like?

Uploading the video now… I forgot, my Ruddertwin knob has been removed previously, and when I went to remove the Speedster knob, I then remembered just how hard you have to hit the knob to drive it out.

Use a hunk of steel just a tad smaller than the screw head and drive it out.. I was using a screw driver trying to be cute but as you will see that failed,,,it will come out that way I promise…Maybe using a small arbor press will work better????

Thanks Guys – it worked a charm.

When the rope sheave was installed they had left the upright in place and I had taken it as integral to the flywheel

I used a punch to remove the knob from underneath on the parts motor as suggested and took the post off the flywheel I wanted to use the same way. The knob assembly pressed back in with hand pressure and a socket re-flared the end on the tube.

                  Test start tomorrow maybe 🙂
