Hi guys, I am super excited, I just bought my first ruddertwin. I have wanted one from the first time I saw a picture of of one. These things are so different from anything I have ever worked on that I have a lot to learn. The ser# is A8975, I believe is 1923 ?. Anyway,it has great spark and good compression and good bounce.however it won’t start. When I prime by holding poppet I get good fuel flow, when I rock flywheel I hear poppet valve working.but,
I can’t seem to get fuel to cyls.the plugs are always dry. I have gotten it to fire a few times by squirting fuel in plug holes. My hand is sore ,not so sure that knob is as cool as I thought it was. Any suggestions would be appricated. Thanks, BillSeptember 4, 2015 at 12:01 am #23135did you completely clean the fuel system? They really do start easy, it is a matter of finding WHERE it likes to have its setting. How far out are you from gently closed?

classicomctools@gmail.comSeptember 4, 2015 at 12:23 am #23139Richard,thanks for the reply. I have set the needle from seated, to 1/4 to 1/2 to 1 to 1 1/2 turns. After a lot of priming I get fuel running out of prop. I am concerned that my lower crank bushings are losing enough seal to pull fuel.the odd thing is that when I rock the flywheel back and forth I can hear the poppet valve open and close. I would think that would indicate crankcase vacuum. Also when I had the mixer valve off I noticed that the poppet would only open about .020-.025, is that enough? Thanks, Bill
September 4, 2015 at 2:03 am #23148It varies with the wear of the engine, as this one takes a gulp of air and a drop of fuel when the poppet valve opens, I am not positive what the "proper" amount of lift is…

September 4, 2015 at 1:19 pm #23176Thanks guys, I’m going to try some richer settings and try again today. I have it at work so I can play with it. It has an adjustment on top of mixer, does this just adjust the spring tension on the poppet? How should this be set for starting? Thanks again, Bill
