Hi – can someone tell me the secret to disconnecting the shifter rod so the lower unit can be detached from the midsection? Motor is a 15 – 16 horse size unit; don’t have the serial or model number with me right now, but if essential to the procedure I can get them tonight. The rod appears to be able to unscrew in the middle of the downhousing, but it will not break free with moderate torque, so I don’t want to ruin it if that is not the correct approach.

      Thanks for any help.

A serial number certainly would help. Do you know if it has Bail-A-Matic? If it does, the pump is located high up in the exhaust housing. You remove the exhaust housing from the powerhead to access it (don’t remove the powerhead). If it does not have Bail-A-Matic, remove the cap from the forward end of the lower unit gearcase, then remove the round nut from the end of the shift rod.

Need any more help? Come back with a number.

Be real careful with that shift rod and nut. That is the weak point on those motors. The rod is turned down very thin at the threaded portion that holds the shift fork. Gentle is the best touch there.

Thanks for the advise. I realize a serial number would help but I just happened to think of it here at the office. I’ll try these instructions and see how far I get. Thanks for the warning too.
