You should be able to hear the carburetor poppet valve working as you spin the motor with the starter rope. On my Evinrude Scout and my Midget, I can turn the flywheel back and forth by hand and hear the poppet valve working. After re reading your post’s, I thought I’d throw that out there… maybe the poppet valve isn’t moving, or isn’t moving enough. If I remember correctly, the needle valve on these little motors doesn’t need to be open much… maybe between a quarter to half a turn at most. Garry does that sound right?
You could also try Mumbles trick and try some soapy water around the upper crankshaft bushing to see if it leaks. Pull the mag plate and flywheel [remove the spark plug wire!] spray with soapy water then turn the prop to see if it leaks. Just a couple more idea’s for you to try….
Garry- the pistons are orientated correctly. Rings moved freely. When I put the head back on, I spaced the ring openings at 180 degrees.
Jerry- will check and listen to the poppet valve to see if it’s bouncing up and down.
Mumbles – great video, will give it a try over the weekend when the funny thing called work doesn’t get in the way.
Is there a test for the lower bearing as well?
If the crank bearings are shot, is there anyone that knows of a competent machine shop that could replace/fix?
All great tips, keep them coming. I think by this weekend we will have this nailed down. The Tubs Pal mix and match should really narrow it down as well.
