I need to pull the lower unit off of the drave shaft tube. The shaft tube is bad but the lower unit is good. There are no bolts. The tube is either pressed into the lower or some sort of sealer or glue was used to hold it together. I wonder if a torch would help. Has anybody else solved this problem? I don’t have a manual.
Speaking of which; I am looking for a manual.
Thanx

September 26, 2016 at 2:18 am #44725It looks like they come apart but I could not get it with a torch.
I have another idea; What about cutting the good skeg off and welding it on the broken lower?
I watched some videos about welding aluminum with brazing rod and a propane torch. It looks easy but there are some questions I have. Ultimately I am looking to sand and polish the lower unit. Is the welded joint going to look discolored or will it be visible after sanding and polishing? What type of braze should I use? If it is weld able, would it be better to go to a pro and how much am I looking at?top lower has bad tube and broken fin. Bottom lower is in perfect shape but has broken skeg. It is the original.

September 26, 2016 at 8:26 pm #44761Collapsing the bent drive shaft tube will let you know if that projection above the pump plunger hole is for an aluminum alignment pin. It would be easier to weld the anti-cavatation ear by the water pump hole rather than the skeg because it is farther from the oil. The keg will not take any abuse. From what I see, ¾ of them are broken off. Running through sand is very hard on the piston of the pump. If it wares through, solder a copper penny over the end. . . 😉
