I’m guessing the guy doesn’t know what "failed" body
work looks like on the gas tank’s so called bullet holes?
Or perhaps he was trying to raise the value by giving
      the outboard a colorful past?
Perhaps I’d pay the $300 if the motor was on Al Capone’s
boat, and the motor was shot as he was "putting" away
across his lake at his Wisconsin’s secret "Hideaway".

Maybe the day the motor died for the previous owner he decided to "finally" kill it by shooting it!

Based on the entrance and exit evidence, it was shot lying down. Sad. Very sad.

I believe that this is an example of "Ballistic Dent Removal"

Blow a few .22 holes and use them to pull out a dent.

I do not know how exit wounds would help however…

These don’t have a good reputation.
                I have a 36 and 37 Twin. .
                I understand the frustration.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

My uncle gave me an old Elgin, since sold, that someone put a lawnmower recoil starter on… By drilling hole in the gas tank and using sheetmetal screws! My uncle had no idea and used it that way for years as he wondered why it leaked gas so badly! People do weird things to old motors…
