      Hi everyone,

I am just about to the finish line of my first restoration. I drilled the rivets out of the serial number tag and I would like to rivet it back in place when I am done.

I’ve used ‘pop rivets’ before but never actual rivets. So, how do you do it and where do you get them? Is there a kit that I can buy?

Thanks for taking the time to read my post and lend some advise!

Perhaps some will chime in and confirm the size and that these will work, but McMaster-Carr has just about every kind of fastener you can think of:

They are called "Drive Screws" http://www.mcmaster.com/#drive-screws/=ytinkz
In the future, instead of drilling them out, IF the hole goes all the way through, you can punch them out from the rear and re-use them. I have also removed them by hacksawing a slot in the head and twist it out with a screwdriver.

            That’s perfect!! Thanks, guys!!

One more question if you don’t mind; How do you determine the correct size/shank diameter?

            Thanks again!!

That would depend on the size drill you used to drill them out.

Tapping them out from the back side with a very small punch ( I use a carpenters nail set ) works great. I have always been able to tap them back in when done with the motor. For that I use a small tack hammer. Never had to replace one because of damage doing it like that.
