After finding a lot of problems with flywheel and crankshaft on this motor I decided to pull lower unit.Removed new impeller and thought maybe things were looking up until I looked down.Bushing that shift rod goes through was up on shaft about two inches.Pulled it off along with three o-rings all different sizes Noticed that bushing was tapered when I took it off.Looked where it goes into the lower unit and seen a groove all the way around where the bushing is suppose to be after it is seated.Do not know if o-ring goes in groove or just where bushing stops.I have been trying to find a parts list on line for the lower unit and the gear case but have had no luck.Would anyone know where I could find one on line. Thank you for your time and looking. Russ….

          Russ,

You want item #36 on the Gear Case page that Steve posted. OMC part # 301877(Shift shaft O-ring) There should only be one under the bushing. The tapered end of the bushing goes in first. Tap it in until the O-ring makes a good seal around the shift shaft. Some people put a little of their favorite sealant on the bushing before installation.

          Nothing to it.

Does the o-ring go into the groove that is down about half way in the bushing housing? Thanks Russ…

I have never seen one of these housings have a groove for the Shift Rod o-ring. I don’t think my ’54 Super Fastwin is any different than your ’53. That O-ring sould just rest on the step inside the bore for the bushing. The bushing is then seated on top to hold the O-ring between the housing and the bushing. It should be gently compressed to form a seal on the housing, busing, and shift rod. I usually lightly coat the outside of the bushing before seating it. Make sure everything is nice and clean before assembly.

FYI, when I popped the shift rod bushing and O-ring out of my QD-14 today,
I did notice a groove in the hole.

                Prepare to be boarded!
