I sandblasted the Herter’s parts, then painted the underside with zinc chromate to hopefully prevent any future corrosion issues (use a respirator if you paint with this stuff!)
Now I’m ready to put it back together and I’m wondering about sealing the bolt holes. I don’t know what Herter did from the factory, but I’m fairly sure that they didn’t use any sort of RTV (which i found underneath when I took it apart.) I was thinking about making gaskets out of some thin rubber to try and keep them from rubbing against the fiberglass, but honestly I don’t know if that’s needed. I might be able to get away with using just a neoprene washer around the bolt holes
Pretty sure that the transom brace and the transom had a rubber gasket between them for vibration.Anyone have any thoughts on the matter?

Transom brace and transom, the notched portion is the part that bolts to the transom.

July 15, 2016 at 1:19 am #40226I’m a personal fan of this product:
July 15, 2016 at 1:09 pm #40247If you do not plan on taking it apart again in your lifetime use the 3M 5200. If at some point you may have to remove the parts again, use 3M 4200. Both are quality proven products in the marine industry.
July 15, 2016 at 1:56 pm #40248Do not use 5200 on that applicationt unless you want to use heat to get the parts off of the fiberglass if you ever have to.
The product I recommended is for marine usage and is what we use daily for mounting engines on transoms to seal the bolt holes.
It is also less expensive than either the 4200 or the 5200. Both of those products are very good and have a place and purpose in the Marine industry but for your application the Boat Life will work very well.July 15, 2016 at 3:13 pm #40252Sik A Flex makes a good line of sealers to. Just make sure the product you use says it’s for use below the waterline.
