Following up on bucc’s thread about removing the iron core from the “military” ignition coils. I think that I figured out how to do it without damaging the coil or the core. What I did was do some excavation around the core on both ends of the coil, this to break the bond of the plastic potting material from the iron core. Using a pointy Exacto blade, carefully cut and chip out the plastic around the core to a depth of about 3/32′. You can tell when you get through the plastic into the fiber sleave. The core is not bonded along it’s length, apparently “stuck “only at the ends. Once cut clear, clamp the core end in a vice (clamp the laminate sandwich, not across the plys), using a wood block with a hole tap the coil down to break it loose. Use a 3/8 ” punch to drive the core all the way out. Because the core end is cut at an angle, I filed the high end down to form a central “hump” for a centered purchase for the punch. I extracted the core, rotated it 90* and reinserted it …for my application in a Bendix- Scintella mag. Sorry, I should have taken more photos of the process, But here is the finished job, note the “excavations” and the “hump” end of the core.
Will lit you all know how this all works out when I get the motor assembled.

I just thought the laminations were sandwiched tight in the
core hole some how.
Hope to see photos of the mag plate when you have it mounted……

Good info. You think the coil will stay on the lam as is?
Hard to remember stop to take pictures when your trying
to get something done.
Tubs.A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
August 30, 2023 at 11:34 am #279971A WAY OUTSIDE THE BOX SOLUTION TO AN INSOVABLE PROBLEM. APPARENTLY BENDIX MADE COIL IN A SPEARATE PROCESS BEFORE INSERTING CORE AND SEALING. YOUR EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS MAY APPLY TO OTHER MAGNETO COILS ADAPTATIONS. MAYBE NOT A ONE SIZE FITS ALL SOLUTION, BUT, AT LEAST SOMETHING TO KEEP IN MIND. SOUNDS LIKE AN OUTBOARDER ARTICLE TO ME;

August 30, 2023 at 5:42 pm #279978Success, we have spark ! I wired up the modified coil added a new foil capacitor and we got a nice strong spark. To recap, after removing the iron core, rotated the coil 90* and re- inserted the core, this to position the secondary tabs up and clear of any grounding surface on the mag plate. Soldered the SP wire to one tab and a ground wire to the other. From here, all the wiring is as conventionally done. The only modification to the mag plate, one hole for the SP wire to exit.
Still have to wrap and coat the coil tabs for extra security.
