Had a great run with my 1929 Speeditwin on Saturday at the Saco River Run, with help from Bill Andrulitis. With horror, we noticed that my gas cap had fallen off and into the river somewhere along the way. Somewhere between 1929 and 2013, the gas cap safety chain (not the official part description) got lost. How you lose the chain without losing the cap is mysterious to me. I’m beginning my search for a replacement. Are there other motors of that period that share the same gas cap? Even better, does anyone have an extra? 😛

I think the gas caps for the Evinrude Sportwin, Fastwin, Fleetwin, and Speeditwin all had the same size thread from ’23 to ’29. Caps after ’27 had a vent screw, since the tanks up until 27 were vented internally. (That’s what that little pip on the Speeditwin T and TS tanks are for.) THese caps should have a steel oil cup integral with the cap, to measure oil into the tank when you fill it. Did yours have the oil cup? I have never seen one of these with a safety chain. I have, however, seen a lot of them with the oil cup rusted away, leaving them to look like a more conventional cap that would need one.

Mine did not have the oil cup. Bill had mentioned that mine looked different, or was missing something….before it went missing. Do you have a photo of what it should look like? Knowing that caps from other models should fit will help my search. Thanks!
