What would the group say about replacing spark plug wires? Before you all pelt me with ‘if it ain’t broke…’ advice, I’m 99% sure I have a bad coil. Solder joint wiggles a little when I apply pressure with my meter probe and readings go anywhere from 13 million down to 3K. Jumps all over the place. So I’m going to do exploratory surgery and remove the solder joint. Whatever the outcome, I then need to resolder that plug wire so I am thinking it’s the right time to replace these wires?

Motor is not yet running, has compression but chasing a spark issue.  No idea about the carb, had it off and the reeds looked new. Silver, shiny, looked great. Tank and cowls are there, but tank has a ton of dings and dents. A full resto is probably not in the cards for this one. ( As much as I’d like to).

      Advice? Thx!

Use 7mm Copper core wire;  NOT the newer type automotive stuff.

I follow a guy on YouTube.  Brandon’s Garage. Trying to learn this outboard stuff. I was hoping that was the correct answer, because that’s exactly what he said!

          Thank You again!

Perfect, thank you. I’ve been looking but could not find it by the foot.

              I appreciate the help!

              Best Regards

That’s some pricey sparkplug wire! There are other vendors with the wire priced at a little over a dollar/Ft. Of course, a 100′ roll can get you a price less than a dollar/Ft.

                I’m not cheap, I’m frugal!

I believe the Packard 440 wire is correct for some auto restorations. That
may explain the price. Search eBay for ” 7mm copper core spark plug wire
by the foot” for some lower priced options.”

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

You might as well get a 100 foot roll of it and get it over with. Here’s the brand that I bought a coupe of year ago: “Standard” 7mm Copper Core Spark Plug Wire…..100 feet shipped to your door for $48.99.   49 Cents a Foot.  (It was 38 Cents a foot when I bought mine!  Inflation!!!)

The quality seems fine to me; I have never had an issue.
