I started working on my $25 Speeditwin, 1948 model 6039. The flywheel on this one will likely need replacement. The key broke at some point and things got a bit loose by the looks of the hub and the crankshaft taper. I believe I can use the crank as is, but the flywheel is iffy at best.

Does anyone know what motors shared the same flywheel? I haven’t pulled the flywheel off my 1948 SpeediFour yet to see if they are the same. Externally they are identical, but underneath may be different. I will find out, but thought I would ask in case anyone knows. How about the BigFour? Just looking for options when it comes to finding a donor.

The flywheel had a toothed lockwasher under the nut, which I do not think was supposed to be there. I have not seen one on other period motors. Again, can anyone say yes or no?

The internals look pretty good. A little scorching, but no visible scoring of pistons/rings. It turns over freely now that I have got oil into all the moving parts. It was a bit stiff prior to that after sitting for who knows how long.

I am hopeful that this will be a runner once I get the flywheel issue sorted out.

If you get stuck I have a spare, but shipping across the border might not be worth it for you! Those flywheels are heavy.

          Chris,

Thanks for that offer. I think I am going to try my SpeediFour flywheel on for a test fit first, just to check the fit with the crankshaft. If it fits OK, then I will start looking for a replacement. I think the original is too messed up for some J-B Weld and a new key.

So today I removed the flywheel on my SpeediFour and verified that it is NOT the same as the SpeediTwin on the underside. Oh well, it was worth a try anyway. I learned something at least.

A member from New Jersey has offered me one, so now just have to figure out how to get it from there to here.
