I removed the flywheel on my 22.5hp Speeditwin and everything looks good including the flywheel key. I’m not sure how to test the coil with my Mercotronic 9800, as the one coil services both spark plugs. I did check the condenser, and I believe it is shorted….that is probably the problem.

Does anyone still sell the condenser for the speeditwin? I have substituted a capacitor from Radio Shack on another motor…a twin cylinder Mercury, I think…can’t remember for sure….and it worked fine. I got the idea from someone on this site. I’m wondering if that capacitor ( I bought several) will also work on the Speeditwin.

      Thanks for the help,
      Jim

I also have new condensers for 1950’s era OMC’s…..will one of those work?

The Mercotronics have a spot for a probe… The instructions show this.. ANY probe the makes contact within that socket on the Mercotronic will work.. The probe goes to the second plug lead, I think it actually grounds it out… Need more details?

The illustration in my manual shows a similar setup, but it’s a little different than my coil and mag plate. I think the problem is with the condenser….when I test it for a short, the needle swings way to the right and doesn’t return back to the left. I tested a couple good condensers, and they tested good.

I’m still wondering if I can use either of the condensers that I mentioned earlier.

            I’ll send you a pm

You need a .3 uf condenser value (anywhere between .27 and .36 uf but .3 works well and is in the middle)

Part numbers 580321, 170002, and 171470 are some OMC ones you may have around that will work.

              Set your points to .015
