Correct. It has a battery pack inside the rear cover. I sent this one back to Stevens to be refurbished. They replaced the vibrator assembly, and a few other internal parts, along with a new meter face [old one faded] and all new alligator clips which they soldered on. At the time, they still had one of the retired employee’s that came in a couple days a week to repair these old machines. This one works perfectly now, and I use it a lot more than I thought I would, even on some newer motors. I test all my coils, new and used before installation.

Here’s an Allen coil tester. Can’t find out much about them,
but I see that they were making testers way back in the
        Ford Model T days.

How does the Steven’s testers differ?

The Stevens in the above pic is a very versatile machine. It performs low and high Ohm’s [resistance] tests, along with a coil power test and a surface leakage test that checks for hairline cracks in the coil. The coil can be load tested with the correct amount of amperage supplied to the primary circuit, while watching to see if spark is produced thru the window on the machines control panel. It also does capacitance, resistance and a functional test [leakage test]for condensers. Another cool thing is the breaker points conditioner function, that sends a low amount of current thru the points while manually opening and closing them. This performs a cleaning of sorts on the contacts. You can also do a continuity test to see if the points are actually ”clean” enough to function. The meter must be in the Green area, to the far right of full scale while testing them for continuity. [using the top scale]

Jerry, Thanks for the run down on the Stevens.
It sounds like it does "more" than the Allen.
