I am having a time finding the correct stripper bolts to remove my flywheel on the 1981 Evinrude 15. I need to lubricate the stator plate rotation.  Advice appreciated.  My first post here.  Hope to learn and share.

        .

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

I have seen most if not all those videos.  The process is familiar to me and I have gear puller and harmonic puller, but the latter uses the three threaded holes adjacent to the center nut for purchase points.  The OMC tool for this is a harmonic tool also.  I just don’t have these 3 bolts to fit the thread size and pattern of these holes(Stripper bolts).  I hesitate to use a gear puller on the edges of the flywheel(warpage).  I was hoping someone knew the exact size and pattern of these bolts.

“Stripper Bolts”, otherwise known by various names such as shoulder screws.  Grade 8 strength, they are what comes with the OMC flywheel puller.  The motor in question most likely has 1/4-20 threads.

Great!  The shoulder bolts I’ve seen were difficult to determine whether their listed size applied to the thread diameter(1/4”) or the shoulder diameter.   I will do some more looking.
              Thanks for your response.

Under no circumstances apply a gear puller to the flywheel rim… NEVER.

As for the bolts, I have used regular grade 8  bolts ,  1/4 – 20 I believe for your motor. Put strong tension on the puller, then a good hard blow  to the puller screw with a heavy hammer. Be sure to still have the flywheel nut installed, just backed off a few turns., unless you are good at catching a flying flywheel.

There us a how to video worth a look and learn…pot metal flywheel on Lightwin was not responding to usual techniques so I went online  to see how the pros do it, Pretty simple. install flywheel puller, tighten up AND then whack top of rim of flywheel alternating sides…IMMEDIATE results. This seems to be a dealership mechanic Time is Money technique to get the job done asap.

Yes, the OMC puller is really a must.  Using alternate pullers, with bolts that aren’t tough enough, usually leads to broken bolts inside the flywheel, and damaged igntion components under the flywheel.  It’s your engine, so it is up to you.  The part number for the new plastic mag plate bushing is:  322435
