Picked up a 1960 Elgin 25 Tiller that is stuck badly. When I pulled the cyl. head I found the piston top to be well above the block.I’ve never seen this long of a stroke on any others I’ve worked on. Is this normal for Elgins? Or has a rod let go? Hope the pictures explain. Thanks Ken

The location of the piston looks normal. The bid divot in the middle of the piston does not. I would proceed carefully, forewarned that someone has beat on the piston to free it up. If you can free it up, though, and you can find an impeller and head gasket, and everything else looks good, it’s probably worth the effort. These are pretty good motors. I ran one for a few years with my boys and sold it to someone who was still using it last I knew.

Thanks Tom. Yes I noticed that beat mark also. I will try and free it up with some 50/50 and see what happens. As long as the piston location is OK I’ll go to the next steps. Thanks Again Ken

drop the lower unit and see if that is where it is stuck.
