’58 10 horse Johnson. Lower carb needle is stuck, even with the packing nut off. Is there a trick to backing the needle out without marring up the brass?

Update…just pulled the carb off the motor and opened it up. Had a rubber? gasket. White powder started falling out of it as I pulled the two halves apart. I’ll try to figure out how to post a couple pics so you can see what is left in the carb in a photo. Any idea what that is? I haven’t seen this before, but I’ve only done a couple outboard carbs.

Also, the saw-toothed piece that the filter sits on in the bottom of the glass bowl is really rusted. Is that a problem?

If it’s stuck from old varnished gasoline, I wonder if putting the carb in a pan of water and
bringing it to a boil would free it up?

I had the same problem recently while preparing the carb on my RD-18 for an overhaul. Neither needle would budge. Similar to what Buc suggested, I dropped the entire carb in a crockpot of water, turned it on high and let it soak for about 30 minutes. Both needles then backed out. The float bowl was covered in varnished old gas so after pulling the needles, I put the carb back in the crockpot, this time with a 50/50 mix of water and Pinesol. After a couple hours soak, the carb came out real clean.
