I have a Johnson KS-15 and a KA-10 and cannot get the flywheel off either. I’ve tried a flat style puller that screws on top of the flywheel, but all I seem to be doing is stretching the screws. Has anyone tried a three jaw puller? I am worried about bending the mag plate. Is it safe to use heat that close to the coils? I’ve tried penetrating oil. I’d appreciate suggestions on how to get these off! Thanks.

May 17, 2020 at 2:57 pm #203331I would not use a three jaw puller. Not sure why you are worried about bending the mag plate unless you are thinking of pulling the plate along with the flywheel? That’s a big no no. Stay with the 3 screw puller. Find hardened bolts (not screws) to screw into the flywheel. Cinch them down even and level. Then tighten down the center bolt of the puller. Then tap on the top of the center bolt with a light hammer. Vibration is important. I have also used heat with a torch around the hub of the flywheel a few times and never ruined the coils. But rarely ever needed to use heat. Just keep tapping on that center bolt and tighten it again occasionally.
May 17, 2020 at 4:25 pm #203338I was thinking it would be hard to get much purchase on the flywheel lip without risking catching the mag plate–they are so close!
What you are saying about stronger screws/bolts makes perfect sense, but I can’t figure out what size they are. They look like 1/4 x 20, except that 20 is the wrong number of threads per inch. Not as many as 28, though. It is close to a 12 x 24, but that seems a little too small. The engines are early 40s–so I doubt metric. This has me stumped, too. Thanks for replies!
May 17, 2020 at 5:40 pm #203342I now understand your concern about catching the narrow lip of the flywheel without damaging the mag plate. In any case a large 3 jaw puller will risk warping the flywheel, especially when the flywheel is stuck tight. That is why flywheel pullers exert their force near the center hub of the flywheel. Be patient. You will get it.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
