Hello,
I apologize for the numerous posts I have been starting in the past few weeks, but I have too many projects to complete this summer.
I am in the process of restoring a few motors, and many of them use a Champion J-8J spark plug. Are there any good substitutes for them? The motors in subject are a 1941 Sears Waterwitch 1 hp and a 1941 Evinrude Sportwin. Another Evinrude from the 40s I have has a J17Lm spark plug on it, and those are much easier to find in my area. I just wanted to check if there are easier to buy substitutes before I buy the ones on eBay that are original (and subsequently more expensive).
Thanks

June 17, 2025 at 6:59 pm #297387I use the J17Lm (lawn Mower) plug in all my small motors, Pal’s Scout, Ranger, Sea King Midget, 3/4 hp waterwitch, and any motor that requires a short plug because of the motor covers pressing against the spark plug boot. June 18, 2025 at 10:58 am #297393Those are the Champion J8J spark plugs and not the HJ8J or J8C spark plugs? I bought a few HJ8J thinking they were the same, but they have a smaller thread. If they are the regular thread J8J spark plugs I would be interested.

But, I know that champion recommends the J17LM for my two stroke Toro snowthrowers. In my feeble way of thinking, this plug was meant for four stroke lawnmowers. I would think it would have a cooler heat range than a two stroke plug because it doesn’t need to contend with burning off oil in the combustion process. But who knows, perhaps I am thinking about this all wrong…. Surely never had any fouling issues using the J17LM in my two stroke snow throwers though.
June 19, 2025 at 10:25 am #297447Does anyone know if the Champion DJ8J (also called a Champion #847) is a replacement for the J8J? Link to the plug at Champion’s website below.

Edit – I just found this which I think answers the J8J question this post was about – Note when you scroll down to the long list of equivalents, J8C is in the cross ref list, but Dj8j is not:
