Suggestions for filter/silencer replacement material

These round filter/silencers (not sure what you call them) part 205016 #70 in the diagram were used on the 60s Evinrudes 10s, 18s, maybe others. I’ve got one that’s disintegrated. Any ideas on what to use in place of it?

I believe it is a compressed fiberglass material, somewhat like fiberglass ductboard. Does anybody know what OMC stopped using real intake silencers and switched over to this rather mickey mouse arrangement? Is it that the fiberglass hoods are supposed to provide the silencing?

I’d like to get an original but I’ve never seen them for sale. I was wondering whether a piece of felt might work. A friend of mine has some of those absorbent spill pads he got from his shop. I might cut out a piece of that and try it.
