I’m rebuilding a Johnson TD 20 and am need of new condensers. The old/original condensers have no markings or part #’s on them. Any help appreciated. Thank you.

December 21, 2016 at 10:08 pm #49545This may help for OMC outboards. . . 🙂
For 510178 use 580321 – – .3 µfd.
December 23, 2016 at 3:32 am #49610Thank you for your responses. I located one individual that had these in stock but his price was about $30.00 a piece. Seems a little excessive but if that’s it , I have no alternatives unless there are substitutes of this size? Thoughts?
December 23, 2016 at 4:49 am #49613There have been a few discussions on this board and the Old Mercury forum regarding the swapping of general purpose electronic store capacitors for condensors. Knowledgable folks have researched and tested alternatives.
You may very well be able to "gut" your OEM capacitors and insert one of these inside the metal housing. Typically these condensors cost pennies and will work just fine.

The link should migrate to your locality automatically.

December 23, 2016 at 12:15 pm #49619Are you sure that you need new condensers? Often times the TD-20 original condensers will work just fine. Of course new ones are nice to have, but may not be necessary.
December 23, 2016 at 3:32 pm #49627I appreciate all of the responses. I have a lot of reading to do as I am not familiar with the newer devices nor do I even know how to install them. But, I will learn.
As to why I think I need new condensers is that neither one passes the test of resistance. Both show no reading on my multiimeter and being that I have gone this far I might as well replace both condensers. Something that caught my eye on another forum is that if you purchase OEM condensers, they may be deteriorated due to their shelf life of 40 – 50 years being that they were discontinued then. Thanks again.
December 23, 2016 at 6:07 pm #49639Condensers should read infinity on resistance test . So no reading is good. Charge you condenser by touching the wires to 1.5 volt battery. Then check voltage on lowest DC scale, you should read voltage and it will blhttp://pochefamily.org/outboard/Conde … ng.htmleed off. Check out this site for condenser testing
