      Greetings.

I got my engine started and it runs good. Put it on my new motor bracket on a 16′ palm beach. It will not go in neutral.

      Model number is 217-58880. s/n= 206117. Tecumseh Power head 640-06A 6702952

From the only documentation I can find on Sears Parts Direct it looks to me that the engine goes in gear up top and not in the lower unit.

Before I start messing around I thought I would seek some advice. I do know that it was shifted while not in shift zone position.

      Any ideas or help appreciated.
      thanks

In theory you shouldn’t be able to shift it ‘out of zone’ unless the shift limiter is also missing. But assuming you did, turning the shift handle to neutral is supposed to catch a tab on the shift adapter. So either the tab broke off or the spring in the shift adapter mechanism broke. You’d need to take the powerhead off to check it out. I might just leave it alone and pretend I’m running an old Merc..

Either way, consider yourself lucky the default is ‘forward’, it could be neutral lol.

Your motor is a "72-’74, it says here.

          Thanks .

Which part is that tab? Is it the Dog?

Boy, hard to tell from that. The dog is what’s supposed to catch it, so apparently there’s nothing for it to catch. Going by memory here, but I think it looks like a flywheel key on the clutch mechanism..Check your PM..

Look at the gearcase diagram – shrink it so you can see the top. Gives you an idea of what the clutch assy looks like.
