I am working on a JH-19 (1964 Johnson 3hp).  I have 9 similar Evinrude /Johnson 3hp motors in my collection and this is a first.

It appears a previous owner some time in this little guy’s past made a modification that just makes no sense (to me).

      The photos tell the story.

I can only guess that an attempt was made to restrict inlet water flow. But why?

Looks more like the PO wanted to stop the water from flowing past the inlet and give the pump a chance to pull it in.  Not saying it’s the right thing to do…

so remove the mod unseen anywhere… fill holes with JB aluminum weld epoxy  polish and paint it 🙂

That modification may actually speed the water past the intakes. The water going around the modification has to accelerate to keep up with the surrounding water that is not affected by the modification. Higher velocity leads to lower pressure.

All of my other OMC 3hp outboards have 10 inlet holes (5 to a side) this JH has 6 inlet holes (3 to a side).

I will remove the “mod”. But to fill the holes, as suggested will surely not be done.

My only reason for posting was a curiosity and to see if anyone has ever seen such a modification.

agreed  I assumed these were  new holes (did not look closely at pict#1 )  but I see they are inlets  so disregard the suggestion

Possibly the previous owner was operating it in cold weather and wanted to cut back on cooling?
