Could a picture or diagram be provided of shift cable attachment to engine shift handle on 57 Evinrude Big Twin 35 HP? At the control box the shift goes all the way into “Forward,” but at the engine the handle barely goes right of “Neutral.” Disconnected, it shifts through Reverse, Neutral, Forward just fine. I’ve tried numerous adjustments but unsuccessful getting shifthandle to move all the way to “Forward” and for the lever to go down into the “Forward” opening at the bottom of the unit. Apologies for possible wrong terminologies; new to this engine. The motor is on our ’58 Thompson Sea Coaster.

Also, is the motor running or the prop being turned over while trying to shift into forward gear? If nothing is moving, the shift dog inside the gearcase may not be lined up correctly with the dogs on the forward gear which will prevent it from going into forward gear. The inner core may be too short to.
