The tapered ring (12) inside the grip is designed to add friction to hold it in place when the grip is not held. It is taken out when remote controls are used. It needs to be greased to turn easily. I have picked up the gear & shafts at our annual January parts swap meet for just a couple of bucks. It pays to be a member . . . 😎
Thanks everyone! Great info! I’ll start with ordering the newer gears. I’ll also pull the handle apart again and check those parts. What kind of grease do you recommend for this application? Will simple silicon grease be sufficient?
BRP, Yamaha, and Mercury all sell their current versions of waterproof grease. All of them are better than the old white grease OMC sold back in "The Day".
