    Hello,

I looking for suggestions and help on this motor. I was inspecting the timer assembly and found the timer aluminum case is cracked. Can this be welded? The internals appear to be in good shape, however, I will check the condition of tbe bushing. I purchased the motor recently and someone been tinkering with it before.

    Another question regarding the coil.
I have 7100 ohms across both spark plug leads. Is that acceptable, what should the resistance be across the primary leads (battery leads) ? If my coil is good, I would like to rewire all the wire leads and solder them. Should I add a capacitor inside the timer across the points? I’m trying to avoid the process of heating theIMG_4759

coil and opening it up, however, will do this if needed. I will really appreciate your recommendations. Thank you!

A common problem with the die cast metal bushing. A replacement can be made of brass or aluminum and installed , riveted in as was the original. Print is attached- Elto-Bushing

      I hope.

7100 ohms sounds right , the primary will be very low resistance , like 1 to 2 ohms.

      Hello,

i have two issue with this timer. First is what you confirmed about the bushing.
the second issue is the flange in tbe timer housing that allows it to rotate on the crankshaft broke off the housing. I’m wondering if this can be welded or ??? If not, I will be looking for another timer assembly

Thank you for confirming the coil resistances. I am new to this forum and don’t know how to thank you for your reply and help. I really do appreciate it!!

Yes your timer bushing needs replaced. The crack in the timer case should be repaired to keep it from growing. This early aluminum can be hard to weld. I used the aluminum brazing rod to repair one of mine. The stuff is a challenge to use (for me) but I’m getting better at it. I’m going to give you titles of some of my You Tube videos  on how the timer works and rebuilding your coil. I can’t post links because too many will make this reply disappear. Search – Super Elto Timer – Adjustments – Function – Explanation.   Search – Super Elto Timer – Its Working!!! –    Search-Restoring Elto Ignition Coil – Quick Step Buy Step Repair Slide Show.  This last video appeared after I posted mine. While he does use a different coil he basically copied what I spent several years to discover. It still may be of some value to you so search- Restoring ELTO Ignition Coils; Ruddertwin, Lightwin, Speedster, Quad, Service Twin, Super C.
