        Noting to set on the timing, except to time the breaker points to open at the correct time as the flywheel magnets pass by the coils. You can get them “good enough” by setting the points gap to 0.020″. Or you can get them perfect by using the special tools timing fixture. richardsoutboardtools.com makes reproduction timing fixtures, if interested.

        EDIT: #1 coil is the one closest to the front of the motor (forward)

            or you can use a timing light and really get them equal, increasing clearance moves mark to the right

              this works also a small bulb and battery wired in series can act as a test meter

                I think checking the timing with engine running, things wiggle, is more accurate especially when the armature plate is loose. Pulling flywheel more than once can a pain thou.
