I have a 5 hp TN 28 that I just got up and running. I replaced the coils and cleaned up the points but never replaced the wires or condensers. It ran fine for the first hour or so and now I have a miss every so often. Not a steady miss but as in a total shut down cylinder but every few seconds. I will replace the plug wires just because I should anyway thinking that might be one cause but maybe the condensers would cause that to? Anyway just wondering if a condenser will do that to. Coils are new and I always thought that when they went they went. The condensers had been replaced at one time as they were the newer style.

Is the miss at idle or at speed?
October 5, 2023 at 12:30 pm #281350As tthe capacitors get hot with the motor they might open up a crack in the dielectric (insulating sheet) & cause intermittent failure. Look real close at your points contact area for either pitting or cavitys with a magnifieing glass. Could be on either side of the contact area depending if the capacitor is under or over capacitaance.I would replace jusr for reliability.

October 5, 2023 at 1:45 pm #281354I havent had much luck with the last few sets of points I have ordered whether they were oem or sierra. They just dont line up right so I have been trying to just clean uo the old ones and reusing the the old.

I was experiencing and intermittent miss this summer.
On one of my many covers on again, off again, I just
happen to notice these marks. Check anyplace the plug
wires are moving and rubbing against some part of the motor.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
October 6, 2023 at 8:54 am #281368Thanks for the info. I am going to relace the wires like I should have from the beginning and also the condensers. The wires looked ok but best to start out all new and if I would have done that from the the start I wouldnt be pulling the flywheel again LOL.

p.s. bottom bolts on the exhaust plate may need some attention / torquing a bit

October 6, 2023 at 12:18 pm #281371Since you are able to get it running, I assume you have already replaced the leather primer seals? If not send $10.00 cash (no checks or MO’s) and a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope to me: Lloyd Lautner 9289 North Long Lake Road Traverse City Michigan 49685.
Bad condensers can certainly cause the problem you have described.
October 6, 2023 at 3:51 pm #281373All back together and running great. At this time the leather seals are doing the job but will keep you in mind when it starts leaking. Will check that out fir building a tester!
