Do you mean like kite string? There’s not much room on there but I can see that working. I just tried a modified rubber washer and it dripped once in about an hour.  Much better. Maybe I should add the string.

Using cotton string is from the past when everyone had
cotton string around. Every store counter had a roll
of wrapping paper and a spool of cotton string.
Ever heard of butcher paper? When you bought meat
it would be wrapped in paper and tied up with cotton
string. If you bought a shirt or pair of pants they would
be wrapped in paper and tided up with string. News
papers were tied in bundles with string to be delivered to
the point of sale as well as after to be recycled. It was
used everywhere and people saved the string to be used
as needed, like for packing. Find a pre WWII motor
that’s been sitting decades and the odds are pretty good
there is cotton string wrapped around the mixture screw.
Today cotton string isn’t that common but everyone has
dental floss. Its easier to use as the string want to unravel.

butcher  cord  was the greatest for  carrying  with you     if you planned to light up  a load of firecrackers   🙂

great stuff to make  time fuses  while  you  walked away  from  a lit cracker fuse   left   in a school ashtray.     never  did get  myself caught 🙂

Thanks, Tubs… good memories. Sanders bakery in these parts, used white cotton string with a spiral purple thread . Grandma had a ball of it in the kitchen drawer.

I’d say the graphite string packing used in plumbing would work as well.
