I purchased an very rough TN28 as a learner. New to outboards. Then I was able to buy a one owner unit in mint condition that had seen the water only once in 1953. I had earlier removed the lower unit on the rough learner. The impeller was dry rotted to powder. The drive shaft on that one only had a press collar and a seal. The book says there should be a spring PN 0303357. Not there. Not up inside that I can see. Pulled the lower unit on the mint condition one and find the same thing. Beginning to believe that there is no spring, but afraid to muck it up. Seeking guidance about this spring and O-rign seal PN 0303347.

Yes, there should be a spring to hold the carbon seal in place. Chances are it was lost sometime in the past while the motor was being serviced. 5.5 and 6 horse motors thru ’79 use the same parts so you shouldn’t have any problem finding one.
