I got tired of guessing how deep to screw in the bolts on the flywheel (harmonic balancer puller) to make certain I had a good grip and more important to make certain the length of the bolts were the same so as not to tilt the puller one side or the other

If you are new at working oldies and pulling flywheels just insert the bolts in each of three legs over a thick washer and at the other end, install nylon lock nuts at the same length on each bolt (I use 4 inch stainless bolts . 1/2 inch is ok see picture

the nylon lock nuts will stay in place , sit squarely on the flywheel and ensure you have reach sufficient depth to prevent stripping the threads while keeping things level top side

Another great tool is a split blade screw driver to hold on to those pesky screws that fall down the engine housing .

Better idea than the masking tape I put on my bolts.
I still use my harmonic balancer puller on small outboards,
but the OMC puller is slick as it has “shoulder bolts” that
can only screw in so far.

Amen on the screwdriver. Here is another style that is worth its weight in gold for working on little stuff like magnetos. Shown is mine holding that little screw that holds the coil & condenser wires to OMC breaker points.. I bought mine from Snap-On in 1954 and it is one of the most-used tools in my toolbox.

I could have used one of those screwdrivers today. I used to have
a magnetic screwdriver but that wouldn’t had done much good
on aluminum screws. The screw I was trying to start while looking
under the motor only fell to the ground three times before I
            finally got it in, lol.

Just a caution…..the split blade screwdriver is not for torquing it is for only for engaging the bolts in place it is also convinient of carb bolts (5)

of course it is only for slotted head bolts:-)
