Guys, What is the best way to remove the top mechanical seal on the crankshaft ? Does the crankcase have to be split open ? Thanks

August 21, 2025 at 4:55 pm #299149There is a special tool made that makes this an easy job, hopefully someone here still makes them. Are you sure the upper seal is bad? These engines have a crazy oil recirculation/removal system that is sometimes to blame….
August 21, 2025 at 5:17 pm #299150Fleetwin, Pretty sure it’s leaking as there is a lot of gray residue on everything below the mag plate ? We’ve removed the fly because we thought the lower spark plug wasn’t firing, new coils, points and condensers ! Good spark on both plugs ! When we turn the flywheel over be hand, you can hear the seal leaking, it makes a squishy sound like air going in and out ! So suspect the seal is bad causing lean mixture and not firing ? Thoughts ?
August 21, 2025 at 5:44 pm #299151Fleetwin,
Just looked up the top seal for the crankshaft, I thought the carbon part of the seal rides against a ceramic disk like in a well pump, but it appears it actually rides against the top of the upper needle bearing ? And the needle bearing has a special ground surface for it to ride against ! Also I just remembered when we pulled that flywheel, there was no spring or washers that would hold the carbon part of the seal against the bearing surface, it’s all missing ?
August 21, 2025 at 8:32 pm #299159That motor uses the carbon seal, well a carbon case with a plain o-ring inside…I tend to use 2 curved picks to gently hook opposite sides, then gently pull upwards.
The carbon part is still available, but pricey:

classicomctools@gmail.comAugust 22, 2025 at 6:02 am #299170It helps to get a drop or 2 of lubricant in there first to try and free a sticky o-ring. 2 stroke oil works. Then try and get it rotating around the crank first to free it by gently “rocking” it back and forth with the 2 picks before starting to pull up. If it’s freed “around” the crank first, it makes it easier to pull up. As you probably know those carbon seals break easily, and that’s when I’ve had a few break on me when using to much force to try and pull it out before making sure it was loose around the crank. There are some new ones on ebay for $15-$20. The other 3 parts are available for around $30 w/shipping on MarineEngine.com. Cheaper on ebay if you search the part numbers.
I can send you a couple new o-rings 301967 in a stamped envelope if you want.
