sorry to keep asking all these questions. Waiting for my invite to The Inner Sanctum
Is there a repair manual for the Champion Blue ribbon that has the torque settings for rebuilding the engine, and rewinding the recoil starter.
Thanks
September 18, 2016 at 2:14 am #44201Hi Bob, I rewound the recoil on my 46-47 2J, I don’t remember the number of turns, but it was pretty straightforward to do by feel. If yours is a 2J with the recoil under the powerhead, just be careful to wind it the right way. The last person to work on mine had wound it backwards. Surprisingly easy to do that when the powerhead is sitting upside down on the bench. I do not have any kind of service manual.

September 18, 2016 at 1:13 pm #44223bob54, what is your year and model of your motor? Might have a digital parts manual for your motor.

September 19, 2016 at 8:55 pm #44328I never did find anything for the torque settings on the head so I just torqued them to one grunt. Wondering if I should have included a half grunt. 😯
September 19, 2016 at 10:07 pm #44334Bob,
That depends on your grunt. One is probably enough, another .5 grunt may be too much. Maybe 1 grunt plus 1.25 ergs. My air cooled VW is only ~30 lb-ft on the head studs. For me that’s only about .8 grunt, so you probably have plenty on them. 😉

-BenSo…can i get a conversion chart of the grunts and ergs into ft. lbs and inch .lbs? Might come in handy for those places where i can’t get a torque wrench into.

Robbie RobertsonSeptember 20, 2016 at 12:00 pm #44373Maybe I can put together a nice spreadsheet in my ‘spare’ time. 😎 😆 For the time being I’ll start with the following: 1 foot-lb (energy) = 13,558,179.48 ergs. With that, realize that you have to keep your "grunt-o-meter" well calibrated to maintain erg-level precision. 😉 😆
