The bolt you mention is used only to set the clearance or fit of the ball in the hitch, with the latch down. It is not to be reset every time you hook up the trailer to the tow vehicle. The spring loaded latch lever on top is what keeps hitch bar from sliding to the rear and opening the hitch, allowing the ball to come out of the hitch.
May 3, 2019 at 9:09 am #174742Thanks for the additional info, guys.
So I had a look at the other side of the hitch and it does not appear to have a hole where indicated in the video above:

It does have a hole in a different place (lower and toward the back). When I first got the trailer I put a padlock in this hole thinking that it might prevent the coupler from sliding back but it did not.

Also, how do you past pictures directly into these threads? I haven’t figured that out yet (or, if I did, I have since forgotten).
May 3, 2019 at 9:58 am #174745In looking at that hole some more, I guess I could just put a flat head bolt through it. Alternatively, I wonder if there is some kind of clamp that fit through it? Neither is a lock, but better than nothing.
May 3, 2019 at 10:07 am #174746or maybe wrap a chain around the whole coupler and lock it with a padlock at the hole? Grasping at straws here…….
May 3, 2019 at 10:24 am #174755or buy a new hitch and swap out the coupler, one that has the hole for the lock

You could drill a hole that when filled with a pad lock at the rear of the cross pin would keep the pin from sliding to the rear. This is way my hitch came when new.
May 3, 2019 at 12:25 pm #174770I fooled with manual image posting a bit yesterday. When you are creating a post, notice under where is says YOU MAY USE THESE HTML TAGS there is a green box which shows the syntax for a post. I used the img (image)one and filled in the src= (source=). Between the quotes place an internet address for the photo, It needs to end with a valid image filename like .jpg. Unfortunately I cannot post exactly the tag because it will try to make an image out of the text and you won’t see the text. Hmmmmm….. I will find a different way maybe.
I even omitted the alt, height, and width parameters and just listed the source and it worked. Don’t forget to have the closing > symbol.-
