Good Afternoon
I have a couple questions that I am hoping you fellows may be able to help me with.
- I am working on a 1962 Johnson 3hp and was going to pull the fuel peacock and filter but the filter stayed in the tank when I turned out the fuel fitting. So I am guessing what ever held them together originally deteriorated. So can I use a punch to gently knock the fuel filter out and reattach to the fuel fitting by soldering or some other method?
- in the Carb kit 0439071 you get two plastic O-rings/washers to use on the high and low speed needles and the packing washers. Would anyone be able to tell me a size of this oring/washer and a source if there is a place to buy a bunch.
Thanks for any help provided.

January 18, 2023 at 3:51 pm #271391Yes, I believe soldering is the best way to re-attach that and I think Mumbles commented on that not too long ago. But I’ve also seen some that were secured with what I believe was 3M 847 or similar, that showed no sign of leakage. As far as the nylon washers that go on after a couple of the cork packing, I’ve gotten them from McMaster Carr and they’re a perfect substitute.

January 18, 2023 at 8:06 pm #271409you if the tank filter element is a problem to fix you can always install a small fuel line filter between the valve and the carb inlet . the small red ones used on lawn mowers should be fine anddo not take up much space.

January 18, 2023 at 9:07 pm #271415Unfortunately, McMaster Carr does not ship to individuals in Canada, only businesses and schools. Have to find another source for those washers!

January 20, 2023 at 2:58 pm #271481When the filter breaks off inside the tank, I’ve removed them by first tapping them and then using a bolt with a nut to draw them out. Once the parts have been thoroughly cleaned, a good epoxy can be used to hold them together.
As far as the plastic washers for the needle packing go, your motor didn’t come with them, as later models did, so I wouldn’t worry about it if they aren’t used. It seems to me the brass gland nuts are a slightly different style to for use with the plastic washers. By that I mean the way they are machined on the inner contact surface.
