Hi all, I recently met a very nice gentleman who restores and works on Briggs engines, I got to talking with him and he offered to sell me 4 outboard motors he had not run in 30 years. The price was right so I bought them. the motors are as follows: 1929 Johnson k-45 7.15hp, 1936 Johnson ls-38 2.1hp, late 50s’ Elgin 7.5hp, and this motor. judging by the size and the fact its a twin I guessing its a 3-5hp. I don’t know anything about it other than it seems to have battery ignition with a timer and external coil of sorts. the wiring and coil look pretty rotted and would probably need replacing but could someone give me an example of how the wiring is supposed to work and hp/year info?
thanks in advance
May 7, 2020 at 2:56 pm #202385The model number is stamped into the plate on the tilt bracket. If there are 7 digits, the model number is the first three. If it’s 8 digits, the model number is the first four. The motor is a 4 hp twin, early ’30’s. Check continuity between the two spark plug leads. If it’s in the kilohm range, it’s probably good. We can work out the wiring, it’s pretty simple.
You’ll likely want to bend the fuel line back to where it was so it’s not up against the muffler.

To my amazement after cleaning the points, carburetor, and hooking up a 6v battery to the coil it fired right up and runs well. Even pumps water well. The model is 413 from the info plate. What would you guys do for servicing the lower unit and water pump? I would imagine it has seals that need replacement? I don’t have experience working on real old motors but I’ve done lots of 40s 50s 60s motors
Link is a video of it running

Gotta ask, did you get zapped by the spark plugs yet?
In the video it looks like you hand gets might close to the plugs, lolPrepare to be boarded!
May 8, 2020 at 2:30 pm #202512I got my lesson on exposed sparkies years ago, the painful way. I’ve learned to be mindful of my hands…
It does run sweet
