Hello everyone, I’m new to the forum. A friend just picked up this engine and sent me a photo of it. It doesn’t look familiar to me. I don’t have the engine here, just the photo he sent so I can’t give any other details. Just wondering if anyone recognises it from the photo. Thanks and good to be on the site! Tom

Looks like a buccaneer/OMC rebranding motor, circa early 50’s.

It’s an OMC / Gale made motor.

Looks like a private label, Gale Products, Atlas Royal to me. Possibly a 5HP?

A 5hp with the Johnson (TN) neutral lower?

Yep. I would say early ’50’s Gale built 5hp with the neutral. It has a star impeller like the TN Johnson. Direct drive models have the wobbler under the prop. Great motors!

It is a 1951-54 Atlas Royal 5hp, made by Gale Products for Atlas Tire dealers (Standard Oil Company–Esso gas stations). Model number 5D10A. Lower unit has a neutral clutch and is the same as the Johnson TN-xx series. Powerhead is typical Gale ‘Wedge-head". Uses the OMC Universal Magneto. Water pump is in the bulge half way down. There are a surprising number of them still around.
