I purchased this motor today at an auction because I like outboard motors and have someone that can typically get them running for me. This one I like and would love to try my first attempt at restoration. I have seen pictures of one that looks very nice with the brass lower end. Like to take it apart and clean and polish everything. My questions is what is the value f this motor In present condition? And what about if I restore it? Don’t want to spend lots of time and probably money restoring something that is not Of much value as I eventually will want to sell And move into another project. Are parts the same as the a-25 model? Any collectibility here?

If you are planning on profiting, not likely! Im usually happy to break even if I can, as I just do it to keep me out of trouble, and keep them out of the recyclers making blue smoke.
That being said, the AB looks very nice polished and restored. I see them on on ebay for pretty big money, not sure what is actually paid though.
January 10, 2016 at 11:46 pm #29967Best case scenerio you get satisfaction of doing a good job, you sell it for what you put into it, don’t fret about your time and get another and another …..It all boils down to what someone is willing to pay and what you are willing to sell . I’m pretty much even with what I’ve spent and sold for. Ain’t gonna get rich but I sure like doing what we do!….just saying…Brian
January 11, 2016 at 1:31 am #29970I watch the Mecum auto and motorcycle auctions frequently as an old gearhead. This weekend (Saturday) they had motorcycles. They had a "restored" to the top 1914 Indian Motocycle that got up to $37000 and did not get sold. Next right after was a 1913 "unrestored" Indian Motocycle. It was clean , original and apparently functional. The price got up to $40,000 and was not sold. The three commentators said they are seeing more unrestored vehicles of all kinds getting higher bucks all the time now because once you clean it up it is NEVER original. So , make it run , functional and keep it functional IMO but it belongs to you and do as you please.

Frankly, I just don’t get it. This should be the frigging easiest question in the world to answer, and nobody does it.
His post started out "I purchased this motor today at an auction", then later in the same paragraph he asked " My questions is what is the value f this motor In present condition?"
Answer was in his own post- ITS WORTH WHAT YOU PAID FOR IT!!!!!" He posted the answer before asking the question.
How about instead of dreaming up all the "what-if" and "best case scenario" BS, why doesn’t somebody just give the man a straight answer?
It’s not rocket science, guys. Don’t worry about being politically correct. Hell knows I sure don’t. And you can call me an ass for saying so, and it won’t bother me any.
And I’ll add that Mikeinri needs to provide better photographs than the ones posted if he wants honest opinions and accurate assessments of what he’s got there. A full length view from BOTH sides of the motor would be a minimum.
I have an AB-25. In fact, I think I have two of them. One might be a BN, I don’t quite remember, as I’ve owned several brass lower unit Johnson motors. I bought an AB-25 off Fleabay several years back, and I paid about $350 US for it at a time when it was common to see the aluminum lower unit A and A-25’s going for about 25-to-30% less than that amount, so use that for what you will.
Hope this helps. but I won’t lose sleep over it if it don’t…..
Best,

January 11, 2016 at 11:04 pm #30005Thank you everyone for the info. I will not be spending a ton of time on this motor to just get back what I paid and lose all my valuable time. I paid under $300 with fees at an auction that was not well advertised and no other boating or fishing stuff. Maybe I paid too much. I have bought and sold some outboards in the past so took a shot at it being a rare valuable model that with a little elbow grease would bring a nice profit. Any parts hard to come by on it? Maybe best to sell in pieces..
January 11, 2016 at 11:31 pm #30006Parts are not that hard to find except for the parts that make it a AB
