I acquired an Evinrude Zephyr which had a adjustable pitch prop
controlled via cable and lever on the side of the engine.
I forget the brand name on the control plate… "Vari Prop"
or something perhaps. Will take photos tomorrow.
On the control panel it shows the forward speed ranges, but
also shows reverse. Did this really work?
Were they a desirable option in the day, or just another fad that
didn’t pan out?
These offered variable pitch(speeds) and also neutral and reverse. Merely a flash in the pan. Didn’t last long on the market. They even offered them for some of the motors which had gear shift. Due to mostly non-shift motors for their applications, I would venture that products came out in the early fifties. One dealer still had most of his original stock in the early nineties.
Tubs, that’s the same brand my Zephyr has, but mine has a
lever more like an old lawnmower throttle.
It’s Model FP 102.
Went to take photos, batteries dead. Put in spares, still
says batteries dead 🙁
Mine has a band that clamps around the lower unit so I believe
no holes were drilled on the bottom end, but believe they did
drill one hole up by the powerhead to attached the control cable
lever.
Took some photos today of my new Evinrude Zephyr
with the Flex-Prop conversion. It seems to have good
compression, so hopefully it will be a runner some day
so I can see the Flex-Prop in action!
I’m unable to find any advertisements or information
on the Flex-Prop conversion kits.
Anyone have literature on these?
Thanks.
Both photos were "upright" on my computer……
What the Heck?
