Anyone repaired west bend 3.5 recoils. I took it apart several times, cleaned and replaced. it will engage couple of times then quit and just pull without engaging. everything looks good, not much to it.  If anyone has messed with them please give a idea of what to look for. Thanks Jim

My little 2 hp West Bend had three ball bearings in the rewind, but I can’t remember
much about it. Perhaps a year and model # would help someone better tell you
        about the rewind.

Have you been to this web site?
        Lots of Viking info.

Do you have this Viking Service Manual that’s on the above site?
Page 301 starts the manual section.

So, is it the kind with three balls?  They must fall into place in the center by simple gravity when not running.  I have never been able to figure out why they sometimes don’t.  Needless to say, they can’t have any stickiness like grease on them.  Suffice to say it is a common problem that still mystifies me.

I’ll have to post a picture tomorrow, it has large washer small spring two arms with small spring on each that extend out when pulled. not much to it.  I cleaned it, work for two or three pulls, then nothing. I’ll do a picture and motor numbers, looks pretty common motor, air cooled, water cooled lower. Jim

It looks vaguely familiar, but can’t remember  when, or what it was
that I worked on, had it.
According to this old post, you motor could be a 1970 model
                  made by Chrysler.

My daughter just pulled a Wizard version out of the storage unit.

We’re just working on getting spark so far.

Those tabs expand into a starter cup on flywheel.

The cup on hers looks worn but we haven’t tried it yet.

I don’t know if it was made by West Bend or Chrysler.

Don’t know when we’ll work on it because she went back to

the ice cream shop and prom is coming up.

Ah yes, I’ve seen those before.  Commonly used on Clinton engines.  I used to fix them by sharpening the pawls (or whatever they called them) so they kind of dig into the cup for a better grip.  In fact, if memory serves correct, they later put little grooves or teeth in the inside of the cup for the pawls to snatch hold of.

EDIT: Made by Fairbanks Morse, used on various engines.  See video

Kohler snowmobile engines had a similar set up with the cogged “cup”, and they
                        wore out fast.
