June 26, 2022 at 4:52 pm #262000Early 1923.Gas cap is from later.
August 4, 2022 at 8:53 pm #264005Thanks, do you have or know where I might find more info on this motor?
August 5, 2022 at 2:45 am #264007It would be best if you asked more specific questions about your motor. It appears to have a cast tank which is correct and the correct magneto lever/kill switch button and correct flywheel for your early motor. They began mfr in 1922.
August 6, 2022 at 5:28 pm #264043Hello Harry,
I think “A” models (2hp) began mfg. in 1922.
A4215 is only numbers I found which put it somewhere around 1929 ,,,,,not sure though.
At this point I’d be interested in any and all information available, have you ever seen a manual or parts list for this model.
I’ll continue to search and dig for info, any feedback or suggestion is appreciated.
August 6, 2022 at 5:32 pm #264044Hello Stanley,
Appreciate the quick reply.
Where did you find information dating it at 1923?
August 6, 2022 at 6:18 pm #264050Stanley is correct, early 1923 motor. Per the clubs Johnson guide book.
August 6, 2022 at 7:47 pm #264051It is a 1923 motor. The serial number can be confirmed by looking at the bottom of the cylinder mounting flange on the crankcase. It was stamped there as well as the rope plate.
Some more pictures would be helpful. A picture straight on the front would confirm if it has its original cylinders. Originals have a narrow intake casting.
A back and both side and lower unit pictures as well.
They are really good running engines.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

August 6, 2022 at 8:54 pm #264056The 1923 A model was the last of the original design, which began with#A506 although small changes were made throughout the late 1921 thru 1923 production (#A506 thru #A 7500).Some significant changes were made in 1924 (#7501 thru #20,000) and then again in 1925.Your #A4215 should have nickel plated steel drive shaft tube, steering rail, jtiller tube with leather “Bulldog” grip and steel warm air tube on carburetor as well as other distinctive features. From what I can see it looks like you have a nice complete example of an early “Waterbug.”
