I got this recoil recently.  There’s a tag that suggests it for a Johnson A-50.  I haven’t seen one before.  I looked for photos online and didn’t find any.  I wonder how it works?  Am I missing any attachment pieces?  Is it only for the A-50? It has two clips and is also bound with two wires.  Do they stay there while in use?  (so many questions……..)

        Nice find!

I think Randy In Tampa knows about these starters.  Let’s wait.

I have one of those on one of my running motors.  I think it is on my K80.  They were an optional extra for that series of motors. The wires and clips are simply there to prevent the spring from popping out while it is not mounted on the motor.

To be a complete working Ree-Koil, you will need the large bronze adapter that screws onto the flywheel, the special tall flywheel nut, and the metal ball(s) that rolls around in the pockets on the adapter.  All should be available by searching.  The adapter and tall flywheel nut should be easy to find.  Don’t remove the wires until installation is understood.

Thanks for the responses.  Hey, Harry, got any pictures of what those parts look like, or a complete unit?  Good to know it’s called a Ree-Koil.

Found this thread from last year https://www.aomci.org/forums/topic/1930s-ree-koil-starter/

                I’m late to the party : )
