I have a 58 Johnson FD-12 and I noticed water coming out from around the shift handle lever. Not a lot but was surprised to see it. Any idea why this is happening?
July 6, 2023 at 10:14 pm #277784There is an O-ring on the shift shaft that is probably worn out. The hole in the housing that the shift shaft passes through also gets worn/wallowed out a bit with time causing leakage. Another member posted here one time with a fix for the worn out hole problem by epoxying in a section of thin brass tubing into the hole. Mumbles or Tubs?

July 6, 2023 at 10:32 pm #277786On a 1954 7.5 hp Evinrude Fleetwin, I used per my notes…..
Fixed shifter bushing with 15/32 x .014 brass tubingNot sure if all shifters of that era used the same size shifter shaft.
Prepare to be boarded!
July 6, 2023 at 11:17 pm #277787Yes, you have to pull the powerhead to access the shift linkage and remove the shifter handle. I just finished a resto job on and FD-12. Here’s what the linkage looks like after you pull the powerhead. Bend the locking tab down, remove the bolt and pull the shift handle out.

Your motors look better on the inside
that mine do on the outside.
.A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
July 7, 2023 at 9:54 am #277795It’s a fairly easy fix using a short length of brass tubing obtained from a hobby store.
I’ll post some photos of the procedure later on today once I resize them.

July 7, 2023 at 12:34 pm #277800As long as you have the powerhead pulled off, you might as well replace the O-ring in the carbon seal as part of the lower crankshaft seal assembly.
